The "eco-NIWA (garden)" project, a sustainable initiative by Hotel Niwa Tokyo, began by processing fallen leaves collected in the hotel's garden into leaf mold. The project's unique approach of repurposing abandoned suitcases within the hotel as planters and serving organically grown vegetables and herbs cultivated on the rooftop in the restaurant was featured as a unique endeavor by the hotel in a news paper "The Mainichi ".
